NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
Filming Locations —

Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz County: The scene was filmed at Big Basin Redwoods State Park on the Redwood Trail and on a soundstage down in L.A. No filming was done at Marin County's Muir Woods, as is often reported.

Pebble Beach, Monterey County: Cypress Point, 17-Mile Drive.

Presidio of San Francisco (GGNRA / Presidio Trust), San Francisco: Fort Point.

City and County of San Francisco: Mission Dolores (16th & Dolores Streets). Legion of Honor. The Conservatory. Brocklebank Apartments (1000 Mason Street). Ernie's Restaurant. The Palace of Fine Arts.

San Juan Bautista, San Benito County: The car traveling on Highway 101 (between Prunedale and San Juan Bautista) was heading in the wrong direction, north instead of south. At the Mission San Juan Bautista the tower was added by special effects.


SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Downtown L.A., Los Angeles, Los Angeles County: Biltmore Hotel.

Jimmy Stewart is hanging on the rooftop, with a fake shot of downtown and the Bay Bridge behind him.

The apartment is supposed to be near Vallejo & Jones Streets,
but was actually filmed in a studio.

Gavin Elster's office at Mission & Spear Streets along the Embarcadero was also shot on a set.

Mission Dolores (named after Laguna de Nuestra Seņora de los Delores) is located at 324 Dolores Street at 16th.
It was established in 1776 and originally called Mission de San Francisco de Asis.

The California Palace of the Legion of Honor, in Lincoln Park by 34th Avenue & Clement Street.

The McKittrick Hotel was at 1000 Eddy Street at Gough, but the Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory Athletic Field
now stands in its place. The St. Paul's Lutheran Church across the street was destroyed by fire.

The Brocklebank Apartments at 1000 Mason Street, near the Fairmont Hotel.

Notice in the first shot that they have ice in their glasses. But here in the second one the cubes have disappeared!
This was all filmed in the studio, but took place at the Pacific Union Club, 1000 California Street.

Panorama of the city from on top of Twin Peaks. The large island in the distance is Angel Island.
The darker green hill in the center is Buena Vista Park. And the large street on the far right is Market.

Both the interiors and exteriors of Ernie's Restaurant were sets built on the Paramount Lot in Los Angeles. The real place is at 847 Montgomery Street in San Francisco.

Possibly closed down, in November 1999
the place was called the Essex Supper Club,
though it still says "Ernie's" in the glass.

The Empire Hotel (940 Sutter Street at Hyde)
is really the York Hotel, San Francisco.

Looking east on Post Street towards the corner of Stockton and Union Square beyond. That's the Westin St. Francis Hotel in the distance. The floral shop Kim Novak had visited was the Podesta Baldacchi florist, possibly on Grant Street.
