This movie was later remade as The Shining, directed by Mick Garris and starring Steven Weber and Rebecca De Mornay.

Filming Locations —

Mount Hood National Forest, Clackamas County: The location that was used for the exterior of the Overlook Hotel was Timberline Lodge, located on the south face of Mount Hood in Mount Hood National Forest, Clackamas County, Oregon. This is out Timberline Highway off Highway 26 at Government Camp, OR. The snowcat scene was filmed on West Leg Road, leading up to the lodge. The interiors, though, were built and filmed at Elstree Studios in England. Interestingly, the book's Room 217 was changed to fictional Room 237 so that future hotel guests would not be afraid to sleep in the real Room 217.

Filming Locations —

Yosemite National Park: The Internet Movie Database lists Yosemite as a filming location. It is true that some of the sets for the Overlook Hotel were based on Yosemite's Ahwanee Hotel, but I do not know if anything was actually filmed there.

Filming Locations —

Glacier National Park, Flathead County.
