Kirk's apartment in San Francisco was filmed on stage at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
star trek II the wrath of khan This behind-the-scenes picture shows the translight used on stage to create the view out Captain Kirk's window. It appears as if the view is from Russian Hill since we can see the Marina and Presidio on the left, the Golden Gate Bridge next, and then Mount Tamalpais in the distance on the right. The Marin County lights, many of which were probably added by the effects crew, are coming from Fort Baker and Sausalito.

This explosion was actually filmed by Industrial Light & Magic crew at the Cow Palace in Daly City, just across the border from San Francisco. The story posted on the IMDB goes as follows: "... They covered the ceiling with a black cloth and placed the camera on the floor looking up at it. The explosion would occur directly above the camera so the fall-out would appear to rush directly towards the point of view. A special high-speed camera was constructed, [one component of which] was a spinning prism, which bent the image onto the film as it rushed past. This increased exposure time without having to slow the frame rate. The camera ran at 2,500 frames per second, which meant that the 0:01.20 long explosion would appear to take 1:40."
