![]() ![]() This was shot by helipcopter above Belvedere and Tiburon on 3 November 2001. Some other shots were done above the Peacock Gap and Loch Lomond neighborhoods of San Rafael, but they weren't used in the final cut.
![]() ![]() Although I scouted various homes in southern Marin County and Saisie Jang scouted the coast of San Mateo County, Claire Kubik (Ashley Judd)'s home was eventually filmed here in Calabasas instead, mostly due to budget and scheduling.
![]() ![]() The Golden Gate Bridge was shot on 3 December 2000. The director had intended to reshoot this on a less foggy day, but when the crew returned in early November 2001 (see above), helicopters were not allowed at the bridge because of the recent terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 and Gov. Gray Davis' sudden announcement about a threat to California's four major bridges. Thus, the original footage remained in the film, but the colors and contrast were tweaked a little bit in post-production. By the way, the black SUV leading Ashley Judd's vehicle was driven by Saisie Jang (Key Assistant Location Manager). Ellen Lent (Location Manager / Production Supervisor) and Warren White (Presidio Trust) were also in the vehicle with her.

![]() ![]() Although the movie identified Franklin, Dade, Heller & Associates as being located at Union Towers, 60800 Union Street, San Francisco, that address does not exist. ![]() At the corner of Columbus and Broadway, that's the Condor Sports Bar in the background. Between this and the following Union Square scene, we needed so much security coverage that we ran out of guards from C & F Motion Picture Security. Thus, I hired and supervised a team of thirty Production Assistants to assist us with watching the equipment, trucks, lights, pre-rigging, and various locations over the course of two weeks.
![]() ![]() This was shot in front of the Victoria's Secret in the Westin St. Francis Hotel at 335 Powell Street at Post. Many of the crew and cast stayed at the St. Francis while we filmed. The staff there was very film-friendly and accomodating.
![]() ![]() The entire Union Square sequence was shot on two nights, 17 and 18 December 2000. We had originally planned for December 11 and 12th, but, just after arriving that Monday evening, the entire shoot was canceled since Ashley Judd had temporarily become ill. We managed to reschedule this entire scene, the preparation of which had taken two months already, in just four days! This involved redoing scores of contracts with local businesses who did things like leaving their Christmas decorations lit all night, allowing us access to their lobbies and fire escapes, and providing us with catering and extras holding space. By the way, this was the last movie ever filmed at this Union Square. Just a week after we wrapped, the park was closed for over 1½ years for a major redesign and renovation to be made. The new Union Square opened at 12:00 noon on Thursday, 25 July 2002.

![]() ![]() The fictional San Lazaro Marine Corps Base was mostly filmed at the former Alameda Naval Air Station. During our four days of filming there, we brought the base back to life again with tanks, jeeps, signage, hundreds of military extras, and extensive repair and painting. Now known as Alameda Point, business such as Manex Studios and ESC Entertainment, as well as many other non-film businesses, have been located here. It also happened to be the site of the major freeway sequence in The Matrix Reloaded.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Located at 391 Pennsylvania Street at 19th Street on San Francisco's Potrero Hill, Grimes' new office was filmed on the very first shoot day, 28 November 2000. As a department, we spent a long time looking for this vital location from the end of the movie. I was the Location Scout who first found and scouted this place, which director Carl Franklin and D.P. Theo van de Sande immediately loved. To make it even more perfect, the house had no occupants during the time that we filmed there. The entire interior was restored and decorated by the art department. I still have a piece of that gray carpet from the fourth picture in a corner of my kitchen! A couple of years after we filmed these scenes here, the house was renovated by its owners and another story was added. |
![]() I saw this movie for the first time with Ellen Lent, Saisie Jang, and Morgan Johnson at the cast-and-crew screening on Saturday, 2 March 2002 (just two days before I began work on Detonator in Downtown Los Angeles), at the 20th Century Fox lot in Century City, Los Angeles. What a perfect place to see my name in the credits of a big studio movie for the first time! I've worked on more Fox movies than any other, my great-granduncle was a Fox screenwriter in the 1930s, and some of my favorite movies of all time were by Fox (Star Wars, Aliens, and Die Hard). Thank you to Carl Franklin and all of the producers for a great experience throughout the course of making this film!
