Iowa Hill, Placer County: The opening scenes in the gold mines were filmed on location here.

City and County of San Francisco: 611 Laguna Street at Hayes. McTeague confessed his dentistry sin at the Cliff House Restaurant. Frenna's Saloon was filmed at 595 Hayes Street.
