It was well into post-production that Universal Pictures decided to allow Tom Shadyac money to do some additional photography for the beginning and end of the film. It was felt that the earlier scenes would provide more of a sense of urgency to Emily Darrow (Susannah Thompson)'s death, while the later scenes would provide more of a sense of danger to Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner)'s final quest to reach the village. Getting trapped in the bus also allowed him to experience the kind of near-death experience that he had been learning about throughout the course of the film. These scenes were filmed around September 2001.
The rescue attempt pictured above was shot just outside of Foresthill, CA, on four miles of private property along the Middle Fork of the American River which forms part of the border between Placer County and El Dorado County. |

The portion with the characters on top of the cliff was shot at The Arboretum of Los Angeles County just off the 210 freeway at 301 North Baldwin Avenue in Arcadia, CA.... |

... while the view to the bus below was shot at Coffeepot Rapids in the Middle Fork American River near Foresthill, Placer County. |

This jump was also shot on location at the Middle Fork American River, but closer to the Tunnel Chute rapids.... |

... as were all of the river-level shots of the bus. |

The scenes inside the bus, though, were filmed in a water tank on the Universal Studios lot in Universal City, Los Angeles. |

The shots of Darrow (Costner) recovering from the bus incident were done back at The Arboretum. |

Michael John Meehan did extensive location scouting of South American waterfalls, but logistics and budget necessitated shooting these scenes on Kauai, Hawai'i, where, interestingly, they needed to create the waterfalls entirely by CGI! |
