Andy Robinson is shooting from the roof of Bank of America,
555 California Avenue at Montgomery Street.

The shooting victim was in the pool on top of the Holiday Inn,
750 Kearny Street, two blocks away.

During a three-day weekend, the crew was allowed to use
Mayor Alioto's chambers for filming.

In this classic scene where Dirty Harry foils a bank robbery while eating a hot dog, the cable car says
"California and Market Streets", the construction appears to be for the new BART system under Market,
the street sign says Pine Street, yet this was all filmed on the backlot at Universal Studios.
dirty harry           dirty harry
These two pictures give away the fact that this is not the real San Francisco. The picture on the left is looking west on Pine Street,
but it deadends when in fact it should not. The picture on the right is looking north on Davis Street, but again there are
buildings going at a strange angle here in the background. Also, the fact that a cable car was shown on Market Street is wrong.
Railroad historian Paul C. Trimble says that no cable car has run on Market Street since early April 1906.

The theater marquee in the background of the same scene as above says Play Misty For Me, which was directed by Clint Eastwood and which had a small role played by Dirty Harry's director Don Siegel.

"I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you got to ask yourself one question... Do I feel lucky. Well, do ya punk?"

These are two BEHIND-THE-SCENES pictures of the lot at Universal Studios where the above scene was filmed. Some of the
buildings are recognizable from the screen shots above, and a motorized cable car is even parked next to the "bank". The theater
marquee is visible in the second picture. Thank you to Jonny Neutkens of the Netherlands for these photographs.

The police station scenes were filmed in the PG&E building.

Two maps of San Francisco are on the back wall
and a model of the City is below the characters.

Dirty Harry is waiting for the killer on the train
tracks going over Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.

Mount Tamalpais can be seen in the background here.

The final showdown was filmed at the old rock quarry.

This whole area has since been built over with a ferry terminal, Larkspur Landing Shopping Center, movie theater, etc. That green hill towards the back-middle of the picture is still here, but has offices on and around it.
