Despite the movie's many references to taking place in San Dimas, Los Angeles County, CA, it seems that none of the movie was actually filmed there. Instead, it was almost all filmed in Phoenix, AZ, and the surrounding cities.

Filming Locations —

Mesa, Maricopa County: The Raging Waters scenes were actually filmed at the Golf Land / Sun Splash Water Park, 155 West Hampton Avenue off Highway 60.

Phoenix, Maricopa County: The scenes at the San Dimas Mall and ice rink were all filmed at the Metro Center Mall, located at 9617 North Metro Parkway Way off Exit 207 of Hwy 17. Bill's house was filmed at North 18th Street & East Bethany Home Road, near the Squaw Peak Recreation Area. The police station was filmed near East Washington Boulevard & North 56th Street.

Scottsdale, Maricopa County: The high school scenes were not filmed at San Dimas High School in California, but at Coronado High School, 2501 North 74th Street at Lewis Avenue, Scottsdale.

Tempe, Maricopa County: "Strange things are afoot at the Circle K" — This scene was filmed at the Circle K at 1010 West Southern Avenue at South Hardy Drive in Tempe. The bowling alley scene was shot at what is now the AMF Bowling Center (formerly Fair Lanes) at 4407 South Rural Road.
