 This exterior is almost definitely San Francisco, but which street? And what is that tentlike crate? | ||||||||||||||||||||||
  These are a couple of the first of many shots done in Golden Gate Park. If indeed they were done on the western half, some might be hard to identify considering the current construction there, not to mention other changes over the last 85 years. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

  Part of the car-chase goes in circles in front of the Murphy Windmill, now in total disrepair at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Great Highway. In the second picture, notice the streetcar that pulls up next to the windmill! I'll have more info on this soon. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
  Both of these shots look like Great Highway. In the second one, Chaplin is heading north, towards the Cliff House west of the distant hill. That shack is the approximate site of the Beach Chalet Restaurant today. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

 The 1915 San Francisco city directory says that Joseph Holle (married to Johanna) was in the business of "bike doctor, bicycles, motorcycles, automobiles and sporting goods" at 20th and Folsom Streets, where I presume this to have been filmed. Mr. Holle's phone number was Valencia-5697 and he lived at 2283 Bryant Street. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
